How important is the way your character looks to you? I know to some, it doesn’t matter. They’ll wear whatever they find and be happy with it, others are more particular. No matter what your fashion sense is, after five years (or more) of playing the same character I bet almost everyone enjoys some sort of change.
This is one of the main reasons why I enjoy the appearance gear of EQ2 – especially in a place where everyone looks similar. With set pieces being common (be they T1 or T4) these little ways to be individual are important to us. It’s also fantastic around holidays and it works as a marketing ploy (station market anyone) in order to sell these bits of ‘unique’ appearance gear. My only qualm with it is that the cloth wearers get the shaft in their appearance, but you can find ways to work around this (station market clothing as well as some sold by the city faction merchants).
I love looking for appearance gear. I could spend hours at the broker searching from levels 1-80 trying to find a piece to add, or looking at everyone I encounter to see what they are wearing. I wish every game out there had appearance slots – although I suppose some games just look so awesome there’s no need.
Last night I headed back to Obelisk of Ahkzul and the shield that I have been trying to get for months and months now did not drop. I wasn’t surprised. I’ve done this zone every day for at least three or four months and I’ve never seen it. A guild mate of mine has it though so I know it’s out there, some where. I’m tired of wearing the RoK shield my healer currently has. I suppose I could try to get the shield from WoE but knowing my luck it wouldn’t drop then either.
Are you going to be playing Champions Online? Starting today I have access for 90 days, so I’ll be giving it a whirl. While I have kept up with the news and other blog reports of this game I have not actually played it yet myself so all of my opinions and views will be brand new. It may also make me a bit slow to grasp things in the long run but I’m looking forward to it none the less. If you’re going to be playing let me know and hopefully we can meet up in game some time.
I also plan on taking advantage of the remaining days I have in WAR, I moved to a new quest hub and have been doing a few public quests. Surprisingly enough all of the zones are highly populated when I happen to be wandering around, with pockets of battle scattered all over the place. Maybe I can get in on some of it without having to worry about turning into a chicken. We’ll just have to see.
Aside from that, my play style has been fairly sparse, something I hope to remedy this weekend with the cooler weather (fingers crossed) but again we’ll just have to see!
Happy gaming no matter where you find yourself!
I agree Lishian, my sarnak is currently rocking the shirtless look with black cloth pants. Rowr!
I’m the guy though who carries around 10 robes on him at all times, just in case I would need to throw one on or whenever the mood strikes. Maybe I care too much about how I look, hehe.
Woot! Look me up in CO; @Ardwulf.
In LOTRO and EQ2, I always preview all of the quest rewards before selecting one. A permanent addition to my wardrobe is much more valuable than some quest reward item I’m going to wear for a few levels and then sell to a vendor.
I’m too sexy for my shirt, unfortunately.
My berserker is still wearing full ice gear from FrostFell, with the danged snowflakes all over the place. So I guess appearance isn’t that important to me in EQ2 (though appearance gear doesn’t squelch the flakes anyone). But in LOTRO, I have several sets of appearance gear (LOTRO let you have 2, and you can toggle between showing one of them or your true gear). I’m not sure why I worry about it in one game but not the other. It may just be because I roleplay (by which I mean my inner monolog is speaking from in that world) more in LOTRO, whereas when I’m in EQ2 I’m often paling around with Angela so I play it more like a game?
The look of my character is extremely important to me. I’ve always been the sort of player/raider that will min-max only to a certain point. Eventually style must prevail. When I was raiding in EQ2 many moons ago I picked loot based on look. During “Classic” Ferrel was so unique looking and well matching (top tier silver plate that was more for tanks than templars) people would stop to look. More than once a day someone would asks, “How do I get that stuff?”
I dislike games that allow dyes or over use textures. It is more important to me that I stand out than be the absolute best stat wise. That is one reason why I wish raid gear was just slightly better than anything else but looked unique. Just something to say “Hey I did something neat.”
I played the Aion beta too, and loved it. I run into the “too many games not enough time” pretty quickly these days so unless work sicks me on it to write about I’ll probably have to pass up playing. Things change though, so who knows!
I love appearance gear in EQ2 :) I call my extra room in the bank, my “closet”! Its full of strongboxes stuffed full of appearance gear LOL! I cant go a month without changing my appearance and if I see another character that looks remotely close to the way I do I’m headed to the nearest banker.
I was after that same shield out of OOA myself. The shiney purple one with overloaded heal if I remember correctly. Seen it drop once when TSO first came out, have yet to see it drop again and I’ve run that zone a million times since. I honestly think they’ve removed it, that’s the only reasonable explanation I can come up with. Either that or that’s what I’m trying to convince myself of for sanity purposes :P
Don’t think I’m going to check out Champions Online. I’ve heard a LOT of great things about it though. Currently Castillion and I are going to venture into Aion , we have preorded Aion and have done beta every chance we’ve gotten. Talk about appearance and character creation though Aion is like a really pretty EQ2 LOL.
Have a great weekend!
