October 2009

Braiiiiins?

So, come around here often?

What’s a pretty thing like you doing in a place like this..

Once rigor mortis sets in I can go *all* night!

Do you have any zombie in you? Would you like some?

If I told you that you had a great body, would you hold it against me and let me eat it?

Do you Play for your Friends?

I’ve always said that my friends are what make games absolutely amazing for me. Being able to interact with them and share stories as we adventure long is a concept that just can’t be beat. Sure, I play lots of games without my friends too, but the games I play the most of, are typically played with at least one other person (or more). Those where my friends don’t typically play I will WANT to play more of, but rarely get around to it.

Would you put up with a poorly made game in order to play with your friends who make it more ‘fun’ for you? Have you before? How far would you go in order to share your gaming experiences with someone you know?

Yesterday was an absolutely amazing time in game, both in The Lord of the Rings Online where my Hobbit Minstrel managed to inch her way to level 15, and in EverQuestII where I spent the evening playing with friends who I haven’t played with in quite some time on the Antonia Bayle server. It started out innocently enough, I peeked at the chronomage quest and noticed it was scornfeathers roost. Then I made the suggestion to Ibeogur that we attempt it without a healer, using chronomagic to mentor down.

We tore apart the zone, and picked up our new relic plushie at the end, which was a lot of fun. We also decided to try our hands at the shard of love – as a berzerker and illusionist combination this zone was TOUGH even using chronomagic to lower the zone by a few levels. We didn’t really get anything to note from the zone but I did pick up a very neat looking sword that I intend on passing to some “yet to be created” alt. My final alt at that because my account will be filled once she’s created, hehe.  Before too long Ultann logged in and he has been leveling a baby dirge for his adventures, so I logged over to my templar (named Petites, which is a play on petite and means small in french) and we headed off to Sinking sands to do more leveling. We headed through Hidden Cache, as well as the instance located in the Sinking Sands Graveyard that escapes my mind right now. Vault of Dust? I think that may be the instance in Clefts of Rujark which is where we headed next. We racked up the achievements, and the alternate advancement points, and over all just had an amazing time joking around and playing the game with each other.

Before too long it was time for me to call it a night (so I could watch some glee and do some knitting before bed) but it was still a LOT of fun, and I had almost forgotten what it was like to have that sort of game play. I’m exceptionally blessed, and I make sure I realize it every single day.

Happy gaming, no matter where it finds you!

Book One, Chapter Five

Lord of the Rings Online has a promotion coming starting the 15th of October and lasting until the 21st where all closed accounts are being re-opened, and there are some special deals you can take advantage of as far as pricing and the new digital expansion. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in middle earth the past few days, exploring with a friend who has never played before.

Our little hobbits inched their way to level 14, and continued working on our epic quest line. Book one chapter five is where we’re sitting at, and we did a little crafting yesterday as well. It was nice to make items that we could use. We didn’t do a lot of side quests, so money is getting pretty tight. After I purchased my three new skills for 17s each I was down to 5s and couldn’t even afford to repair. I know if I spend a little time farming or working on side quests the coin would be easier to gain.

We also got lucky and managed to find ourselves a few pieces of amazing gear as loot from random encounters, I won myself a cloth hat (purple, whatever rank that is – rare I think?) that looks almost exactly like a witch hat (or a wizard 101 hat if you talk with Toargo who mentioned it yesterday) and Toargo (a guardian) won himself a very nice earring. We also managed to gear ourselves out a bit with some fancy gear from quest rewards, new weapons were made by Toargo but those were quickly replaced with quested items.

The game is much like I remembered it, a lot of questing, and a LOT of running around. We spent far more time traveling yesterday then anything else. It’s fun to play with friends, and even more fun to be playing with someone who has never experienced the game before on any level. It helps make things fresh and new although the highest I’ve ever gotten in game is level 17 so I certainly haven’t experienced all that much myself yet either and I’m looking forward to more.

Wednesday! Thankfully this is a short week and it’s going by quite fast. I hope everyone has been enjoying the week thus far. Happy gaming!

When is it the End?

This weekend was great both in game and out. On Saturday before I headed off to a (very filling) wonderful Thanksgiving dinner, I spent some time using Chronomagic to mentor down and complete a few Desert of Flames raids – including the twin dragons that give you the shimmering scale to get into Djin Masters Prism (a zone I have only ever done once).

It gave me a lot of achievements, and slowly over the course of them I started inching my way towards level 80. Yesterday (which was a wonderful holiday Monday) I spent the evening doing a few instances, Necrotic Asylum and Halls of the Forsaken. I was almost there, 10% away from my (13th?) level 80 character. My group decided to take a quick trip through the shard of love which rewards a LOT of experience. It was fantastic.

Finally, I could put on all of the gear that I had stashed aside for numerous levls now, including the nice fabled shield from Outer Stronghold that has ranger written all over it. Now I’ll have to try to start my epic, and next weekend when Paradise Lost does their VP run I should be able to get my mythical (fingers crossed) which would be fantastic. We’ll see how it goes.

Now that I’ve hit level 80 (again) I’m wondering how to people categorize the “end” of a game for them – specifically an MMO that technically shouldn’t even have an end. When do you move on? When the game in general stops being fun? When you gain the final level? When you’ve completed every goal you set out for yourself? When you’re sporting nothing but the best of the best in terms of gear and spells? When you reach 200aa? When do you finally tell yourself that a character is “complete” or at least finished enough for you to start working on something else (for me it will be my 75 paladin).

The ranger is completely different from what I typically play – and I’m enjoying every second of it. I have always played support and healer classes, so being able to ping things off with a bow is a LOT of fun. Night of the dead is coming up soon, not to mention a few other in game events, and I’m looking forward to it all.

Hope everyone else had an amazing weekend, I’ll see you in Norrath!

Who you calling shorty?!

I love gaming. I never seem to have enough time to play everything I want (especially when I’m restricted by work) but I do try to get a few hours in here and there when I can. I’ve been debating picking up the $200 life time subscription to Lord of the Rings Online, I enjoy the game a great deal and I don’t think it’s going anywhere. Would I play it enough to justify $200? I think over time, yes. Short term maybe not but a life time is a long time especially if you look at how much money I’ve spent on my EQ and EQ2 subscriptions over the last 7 years. It’s something I’m still thinking about in any case. While I think about it, I have the account active for a month at least and a friend who had wanted to try the game out decided to pick it up too. As we all know games are wonderful but the one thing that makes them even better is having friends to play with and if not to play with then at least to talk to. I don’t always want to group up, but I do always enjoy a good conversation.

So it was that I found myself with little hobbit Lysthia, a minstrel, exploring around open fields and taking in the comments from someone who has never played the game before. Their main comments were about how beautiful the game was, and how it would take a little getting used to in order to maneuver around.  The game is very similar in play style to EQ2 (so far at least) so they shouldn’t have too much trouble as that was their game of choice for the past few years.

Today is turkey day here in Canada, so a happy thanksgiving to you all! I’m going to enjoy the day by gaming, gaming, and more gaming – with a little laundry tossed in there just so I feel productive. I hope everyone else has an amazing day, and I’m looking forward to doing more exploring in Norrath, Telon, Wizard City, and Middle Earth. Now, does someone have a few extra hours they can lend me?
