ARK: Survival Evolved

This year will probably be known as the year I rarely post. Life has just been crazy, and when I have a minute or two of free time there’s always something else that needs to be done, like house chores, or reading, or groceries. I’m still working 48 hours a week, and I don’t have a lot of free time to game, let alone free time to write about gaming. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been playing anything though!

ARK: Survival Evolved released, a game I had never heard of before and was certainly not on my radar in any way shape or form. I saw a few friends on my list playing it on release day and then I decided on a whim to pick it up because it sounded like something I would be interested in. I was right. I love this game. It’s another survival game, this time with dinosaurs roaming the planet. You’re left in an area with an implant in your arm and no memory as to what has happened. There are a few hosted servers up for the game which include PvP and PvE servers, but I decided that I’d be better off running my own server, so after a few days of trying to figure things out, I successfully got that started. I opened it to a handful of friends, and let the dinosaur taming begin.

This game is incredibly beautiful, and even though it’s in early access right now (I know, what ever happened to me not buying in to early access games?!) there’s already a lot of features completed (along with a lot of bugs). Crafting is simple, you run around collecting components and killing things, as you do these basic tasks you’ll level up and earn ‘points’ to unlock recipes. There are not enough levels in-game to be able to unlock everything, so your best bet is to trade off on learning recipes with a friend. That way you’ll end up with a great selection.

Then of course comes the survival part. Dinosaurs will come and break through your structures, so you want to build in a location that’s going to be relatively ‘safe’. I ended up learning this the hard way as I had to re-build my home a handful of times. Eventually I settled on a location that was against a cliff, so that was at least one side where I didn’t have to worry about dinosaurs coming from. As you get higher in level you of course unlock more powerful recipes, and are able to build more sound structures. You can also create narcotics, pots for cooking, storage, and beds that let you respawn in camp instead of many miles away.

The dinosaurs are incredible, and it takes some learning (if you’re not familiar with them) to figure out which ones are only interested in the plants and shrubs near by and which ones are interested in tearing you into tiny pieces. The game released at a great time, too, when hype for Jurassic World is at a record high. I can’t wait to see where they take the game in the next year, and even though there are bugs, it’s probably one of the best early release games I’ve played to date. Check it out on steam (it’s also 17% off right now).

Birthday Games

2015-04-05_00007

My birthday was two weeks ago, and I got some pretty awesome games from some pretty awesome people. I’ve been trying to fit in some time here and there to play, but of course there are just so many games out there, finding enough time can be a game in itself.

One of the games I got was Hyper Dimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 and of course a whole slew of DLC for the game. It’s cute, it’s fun, it’s a bit of a grind-fest but I don’t mind that at all. The characters have personality in this turn based JRPG,  and it’s a lighthearted funny game that you really can’t take too seriously. Some days I really need that.

Another game I received was Fortune’s Tavern. Now this game is a bit misleading in its description. It sounds as though you’re going to be running a tavern, maybe something like running a shop in Recettear. Unfortunately it’s still got a lot of bugs, so if you’re looking for a polished game keep in mind the development is still going on. I had issues getting it to run at first (lots of crashes if I touched anything at all while the game launched) and you want to make sure you’re not playing in full screen. The movement is also a bit wonky, you use your arrow keys to move around the map and have to aim for doorways and watch out for walls. It’s not quite as responsive as I would have liked, but that’s not necessarily a deal breaker for me. It does bring back a lot of nostalgia, it has an older pixilated look to it, and it reminds me of Harvest Moon in more ways than one. You’re given a brief tutorial with setting up the inn, how to grab quests, and how to earn coin. You learn the story of the land, and get some combat experience in. My first pet was a chicken – doesn’t get much better than that. There are also some DLC available, which I was also lucky enough to have been gifted.

I haven’t had a chance to play If my Heart Had Wings yet, but it’s on my list of games for this week. I’m hoping to get back to a ‘New Games Thursday’ type post where I can talk about some of the .. well, new games.. on Thursdays. This was another birthday wishlist gift, and I’m really looking forward to getting into the story. These visual novels are just a real guilty pleasure for me probably stemming from the fact that I love reading and you don’t have to ‘compete’ to play these types of ‘games’.

Dandelion – Wishes Brought To You is another game I haven’t had the time to start playing yet, but I’m looking forward to it. It also falls into the ‘dating sim’ or ‘visual novel’ type game, so it’s another relaxing game where I don’t have to be stressed by competition.

What have you been playing lately, picked up any new games? Have a backlog of awesomeness that you just don’t have the time to get to? Let me know in comments!

Did you Escape the Steam Sale?

Legend_of_Grimrock_2_screenshot_1

I have a handful of games on my steam wishlist, but I didn’t really come across any must-have sales this steam sale. I was generously gifted Legend of Grimrock II from a friend, which of course put a huge smile on my face. I really do know some amazing people. I’m hoping to spend some time playing DA:I this week, along with the new game I just got, some Sims 4, and some Tropico 5 (I have a craving). Of course all of that will depend on how many free minutes I can find in my day!

What about everyone else? Did you pick up any games on the black Friday sales, steam or otherwise? Maybe a new console?

Lets Indulge

screen_natalieI know it’s hard to believe, but some times I just don’t feel like playing an MMO. There are a handful of games that I absolutely love to indulge in, and my latest is a game called Flower Shop: Winter in Fairbrook. It’s a dating / farming simulation game – I know, I know. Laugh away. These visual novels (also known as otome) don’t typically include a lot of actual game play, but a well done one is fantastic and can keep me entertained for hours.

The one I was playing before this was Magical Diary (also on steam), which is where I first discovered that I really enjoy these types of games.

Is there a game that is a bit off of the beaten path that you enjoy playing? I have a small handful of friends who also enjoy these types of games, but it’s not exactly a popular genre in my circles which can make finding these gems difficult. Have you ever tried a genre that you had never heard of before and then found yourself completely enthralled with it? Let me know below in comments!

Happy gaming, no matter where you find yourself.

Steam Sales and New Games

2014-06-29_00004I haven’t had a reason to purchase very many steam games lately, I just haven’t had the time to play. That changed slightly with this past sale though. One of the best gifts I got was “You need a Budget 4” – the flash sale marked this app down to $15, a huge deal considering regular price is $60. I had already used the 7 day trial and knew that this app is wonderful for keeping on track with budgeting. In school I never really learned how to budget, or what money should be going towards. While I’m lucky enough to have a fantastic job that may not always be the case and I want to be prepared for whatever life tosses my way. Because I’m such a fan of lists and charts and graphs, this app is perfect for me. Teaches me to assign every dollar a purpose, and then helps me keep on track, with some room for changes so I don’t feel restrictive. Highly recommended.

The next game I got was Edge of Space, which is a lot like terraria, but in space. I found the font a bit difficult on the eyes, and the tutorial was more confusing than it needed to be, but the game is still in development, so there’s room for them to improve. It’s also a lot more difficult than terraria, or so I found.

Of course a steam sale wouldn’t be complete without goat simulator, which was also gifted to me. This game looked hilarious but I’ll be honest, I had absolutely no intentions of purchasing it (or even adding it to my wishlist). I noticed that a lot of my friends had picked up the game (for reasons I couldn’t fathom) and bam, there it was in my inventory.

Finally, the talk of the town lately, Divinity: Original Sin. An RPG that has solo and multiplayer hosted on steam servers, I was incredibly surprised by how much FUN this game has been so far. The story is great, and while playing with a friend I had a blast doing rock / paper / scissor fights in order to see which way an argument would sway. The game also comes with an RPG toolkit, so if you would rather create adventures instead of play through them, have at it.

Did you pick up any games this steam sale? Let me know in comments below!
