Steam Game

Foundation

Pictured above is my latest obsession, the textile section of ‘foundation’ a game I recently picked up on the summer steam sale. Well, my husband picked it up for me as a gift.

If you’ve ever played Banished before then you will already be familiar with how to play Foundation, because the two play almost similarly. So far the main differences (besides graphics) is that in foundation your town acts more like a town, you train soldiers and can send them out on missions (I’ve lost a few townsfolk that way so far) and there’s more ‘stuff’ at the base game. For Banished I found I needed to have mods to expand the base gameplay.

This game IS in early access, and has been for some time, but it’s a fun little play especially since it’s on sale right now. I’m hoping that it continues to be developed, I’ve been burned by early access games in the past. In the meantime, I feel like I’m at least getting my monies worth from it so far. The graphics are cute (and detailed) and so far at least there isn’t a lot of ‘bad’ going on. I’m not sure if that’s because of a setting some place or what, but it makes for good casual gaming where I can just sit and watch the world grow.

Slay the Spire

This month the humble bundle early unlock caught my eye almost immediately. Slay the Spire released earlier this year, but I had never picked it up for whatever reason, even though I happen to really enjoy playing card games (and this one has a bunch more to it). I already subscribe to the humblebundle monthly but decided to pay it ahead of time to unlock the two games they mentioned. I have little interest in Squad – but I’m INCREDIBLY glad I picked up Slay the Spire.

It’s a cute little card game where you also earn relics that can add / negate / destroy certain aspects of each fight. You can upgrade cards, visit merchants, and basically follow a path of monsters and bosses until you reach the top of the ‘spire’. There are three acts, three different characters, and before I knew it I had invested multiple hours into the game.

There’s quite a bit of randomness to the initial climb so even if you fail (which I do, often) you won’t feel like you’re doing the exact same fight all over again. Once you beat the first three acts you can also ascend your character, improving rewards for each defeated creature (but also increasing their difficulty). So far I’ve only ascended once, with one character. Lots more to go!

Anyone else pick this game up early?

Garden Paws

When I first started playing Garden Paws I didn’t really understand what I was doing. I saw rooms I could join, and a story mode and a creative mode. I saw a lot of locked rooms that I couldn’t get into and cute little animals that I could turn my avatar into.

I spent some time playing it last night, and this game is just too dang cute! I collected some wood, opened up a shop, sold some items I had collected. Explored the areas closest to me and managed to find some chests with goodies. I was going to go further and get into the crafting portion but alas life happened and I had to step away. I’m hoping to get further in today and maybe I can start up the farming portion!

As always, happy gaming, no matter where you find yourself.

Games that Surprise You

When was the last time a game took you by surprise? A game that wasn’t even on your radar and you had barely acknowledged as being out there – suddenly you’re playing it (or reading about it) and you stop and think ‘wow, this is really something special’. I find that we tend to research these purchases far more than we research anything else we spend money on, and that tends to leave us reluctant to splurge on something we’re not 100% sure about.

I don’t look into many of my games before buying them. I sign up for humblebundle monthly just so that I get a surprise selection of games I’ve never heard of each month, and in those bundles there’s usually one or two REALLY neat ones that catch my attention.

Yoku’s Island Express is one such game. It came from the latest humblebundle and I had never heard of it before. It released May 2018, so it has been out a while.

The reason I love it is because I’m a sucker for pinball games. That’s right folks, I LOVE pinball. Rollers of the Realm? I was all over that one. Yoku’s Island Express uses pinball mechanics and it’s just an absolutely beautiful game. One I typically wouldn’t have even given the time of day, because lets face it it’s niche and none of my friends have played it.

So what are your surprise games? Ones that you had never heard of that just caught you off guard. Let me know in comments, and as always, happy gaming, no matter where you find yourself.
