VG

Now THAT was fun

Once upon a time, way back when, in the days when Vanguard first released I decided I would try a paladin. I actually enjoyed it – my first tank ever. I can’t remember why I deleted, it was probably something silly like I needed to cut down the number of alts I had. I never leveled very far and it was well before the paladin revamp took place and I still loved it. In fact I loved it so much I wrote about it on this site, here

I was feeling restless late last night, even after doing a little art work. It was around 10pm and I simply was not tired. Every so often I have to remind myself I’m not 60 years old, and stay up past midnight (I’m up around 5:30-6am every single day) so that’s what I did last night.

I didn’t want to out level Kanad, and I wasn’t in the mood for diplomacy nor was I in the mood to craft. So I decided to create another character (of course) and have free reign of the Isle of Dawn.

I quickly lost track of time and my little raki paladin went from level 1-9 before I’d blinked. I looked at the clock and noticed it was 2am and I was getting cranky and tired (especially since I’d been dying in that blasted temple a few times). I can not for the life of me seem to figure out what the heck to do in order to pass a certain wall of flame that stands in front of me and the next portions of my quests. I’m sure one of the quests I have on me must be the access one. Probably the one that requires me to kill a handful of named in locations I have no idea about and collect little bits of poems from them.

I walked towards the temple ‘elevator’ wary – I’d read Tipa’s post on this beast. I DID get stuck – but only when I had the buff from the Pegasus on, so I quickly learned to click that off before ever stepping foot onto the floating mass of air. I’d seen these elevators before, in a 30’s zone and I hate them. They’re hard to maneuver around and just plain annoying. Not that the elevator did me any good since I couldn’t get past the barrier of flames on the bottom floor.

I had so much fun though it surprised me. I have a quest for a cloak that I really want to complete. A class specific cloak with a nifty little graphic on it. It’s my goal to hit level 10 in all three spheres before leaving the island and I’m thinking that the paladin may be a better fit to play with Kanad (he’s a shaman, healer) and maybe we should form up a brother hood so that neither of us out levels the other. An idea to contemplate at least.

At 6:30am yesterday it was the quietest I’d seen the new starter zone, with 35 people in it. Every single other time I’ve been there lately there have been no less then 40, and probably a great deal more. It’s fantastic to see.

Now if only I could find my way to the named I need..

Ki The Fiend Hunter – Waves Breaking

Yesterday was time for a little more diplomacy as I wandered through the Isle of Dawn in Vanguard. I again didn’t want to out level my partner in crime, and wanted to continue to explore the quests I had been working on. By the end, I hit level 9 and part way into it (in diplomacy) – once I hit 10 I’ll switch to crafting I think. Anyhow.

The Magistrate wanted me to interview some hobgoblins (who were supporting him) on the docks of the village – they were having a tea party. That is to say, they were dumping all the tea into the water in support of the magistrate. Go figure. I had to laugh as I interviewed the last ‘hobgoblin’ who was not one at all, but a farmer down the street dressed in the skin of a hobgoblin. While I interviewed them their appearance changed and they wandered back to their farm.

The quests got harder (understandably) but I managed without having to buy any of the expensive 1s cards that the diplomacy vendor sells. I’ve lost a few parles but nothing important. Of course I’ve played diplomacy before so that comes in handy.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the rewards are just amazing – and I’m a little sad that my other diplomates who are off of this island (and I don’t believe there’s a method to get back to it?) will be unable to get these benefits. I’ve gotten a cloak (last time I played there were no diplomacy cloaks with stats), a bracelet (there were only one of these), a full set of gear and some other bits and pieces. I’ve built my deck heavy with flattery, and it seems to be working out well (at least on the island).

Eventually I was sent to a little burnt down village, being invaded by floating eyes (you’ve probably seen them before in Kojani) and what not. The npc there told me they needed a special type of hunter to deal with the problem, and that they had tried to convince her to come help – with no success.

So of course that leaves it up to you. It’s always up to you after all. The person’s name is Ki The Fiend Hunter – and the problem is that although the quest says she has a particular affinity for the evil badies, it does not tell you where she is.

So I spent 30 minutes or so running all over the place looking for her. Then I asked in the main channels – and someone replied (woot) that I should rent a Pegasus, and fly to the temple.

Temple? Hrms. They must mean that dark ominous looking building just North of where I was standing. I had actually created a macro that was /targetauto Ki  and as I ran around spamming it, the only thing it picked up was a King Crab from the nearby river.

I decided what the heck, grabbed a Pegasus, flew over to the dark building with purple swirls (remember, I’m of a low adventure level so these places still scare me) and hit my macro.

Well what do ya know, there tucked away on the left hand side in a little alcove was Ki The Fiend Hunter. Only problem is that whole little landing was swarming with level 7-9 mobs. So I hung around a little, until a few more brave adventurers went to clear their way into the temple, and then made the little trek across to talk Ki into helping the Magistrate.

Back to the npc afterwards – where a 15 minute warning sounded that servers were coming down. I was so close to finishing my quest too! Just had to talk to the five brave adventurers who were going to help deal with this ‘problem’ they had been having, along with Ki. Dang it.

Oh well, I guess it’s time to see if servers are back up today so I can finish off the chain! Great story so far.

Slappy The Cool – Too Cool for School

I have to admit. I wasn’t expecting it. Then again, who would have been?

There I was, wandering around Telon completing random quests, saving the world – when who should show up?

Slappy The Cool.

Upon his arrival, everyone, players and npc alike – broke into some sort of odd dance move and you could hear the sounds of music being played from some magical boom box that you couldn’t quite see. At the time, I figured it was a fluke or a GM playing around with us. I was standing right beside a heavily populated quest npc and I thought nothing of it. But as I continued my quests around Telon I’d see Slappy a few more times. Each time the npc and players would break into dance and get their groove on in a small circle surrounding Slappy.

I almost cried laughing every single time, it was that hilarious to watch. Minding my own business, my brain filled with hobgoblin and death when — OH! I LOVE THIS SONG! It’s time to get jiggy.

So where does Slappy come from? Well, last night I didn’t want to level my adventuring too high. Kanad was not on yet, and there’s no real mentoring system in Vangard though you can turn off experience. I didn’t want to work on quests and potentially out level (or have to re-do the quests later). So I decided it would be a great night to work on the diplomacy chains.

The Isle of Dawn is great for diplomacy. They had the basic introduction quests that every starter town has, and then the story moved on from there. Unlike the starter towns – it actually gives you two carrying cases for your diplomacy junk fairly early on. Anyone who’s ever done diplomacy before understands how valuable this is. It also gives you a lot of gear with some pretty good diplomacy presence on it – another huge plus.

So I wandered around for a bit, rallying the veterans, interrogation the hobgoblins, and gathering pieces from npc to build a flag that would help raise the moral of the troops who were fighting those hobgoblins. Mid way through one of the chains – I was sent to talk to a hobgoblin Seer, in the middle of a camp of level 9 mobs (and remember, I’m only a level 6 adventurer, so it was scary!) who should I see standing right by some totem pole type structure? None other then Slappy The Cool, of course. I hailed one of the npc by him and did the diplomacy quest they offered – and was rewarded the whistle that calls Slappy. It has a five minute recast timer, good thing or else I’d be using that whistle to get jiggy with it all the time.

As always happens I lost track of time doing my diplomacy quests, and my diplomacy level is now actually higher then my adventure level. I love the way the Isle of Dawn lets you move the city levers with civic diplomacy so that you actually get a pretty good feel for the game and how it can affect Telon. Of course diplomacy was not integrated very nicely into the game as a whole, but it’s still one of those spheres that I just love doing. With the stories, gear sets, and random bits if information you can get (blackmail, etc) as well as just getting junk to sell, not to mention putting up buffs that benefit crafters and adventurers alike – I think it’s a wonderful aspect to the game.

Slappy just made it all that much more cool.

Newbie Island? Sounds like FUN

I’ve always been a fan of Vanguard – even though there are lots of people who are not, who have had horrible experiences with the game. I tend to play it for a bit and then take a break and then play it again for a bit, remembering why I love it. It’s not quite enough to draw me away from EQ2, but it’s certainly got aspects to it that I enjoy a great deal. When the release of GU6 implemented the ‘newbie island’ where all characters had the option (or not) of starting out, I decided to head back to the game and see what it was all about.

I decided to ask if Kanad (who also plays Eq1 Nostalgia as Kanad, and EQ2 Nostalgia as Kasul) wanted to test out his station access and give Vanguard a try. Now, Kanad has never played Vanguard before. He’s only got blog posts to go by so I wasn’t sure what he was expecting as far as the game goes. He’ll have to write about that himself. He played EQ1 quite heavily, and just got into EQ2 for the first time in April (and got his crafter epic yesterday, congratulations!) anyhow, he didn’t have a lot of game stuff to go on already.

So he made a barbarian type shaman, and I decided to try out a druid (which is a mage like nuker who uses the forces of the environment to smite their foes) and we had a LOT of fun losing ourselves in Telon for a few hours. I actually lost track of time.

I don’t consider myself a newb to the game. I’ve got a level 41 adventurer (close to 42!) and she’s also a 45 crafter. Only level 10 as far as diplomacy goes, but I know how it works and I’ve got enough gear to move the levers and put up crafter buffs of my choosing. I do use a mod for maps, because it shows the harvest node areas on them. We ran around killing hobgoblins and saving villagers, closing down portals and adventuring through caves. We didn’t run into a single problem – though we’ve only played up to level 6 so far. Everything ran smooth and compared to starting out in the regular cities – WOW do you ever get some nice gear!

There were over 100 people in the one chunk running around, channels were popular, and areas were packed. Thankfully quick respawns take care of any major issues with over camping. It was great to see and I can only hope that at least some of those players will continue on through the levels and make Vanguard their new home. A few times throughout the night I’d hear a shout or a chunk message that exclaimed “how had I not heard about this awesome game before”. Of course now it’s a LOT more stable then when I played at release.

Kanad had no issue using the default map once he figured out that clicking on the empty circles in the description of the quest would like up on the map where to walk to for quest objectives. He did comment that the spell refresh feels slightly different then EQ2, but other then that, no real incidents.

I had not delved into the diplomacy aspect of the newbie island yet, nor the crafting. Maybe I’ll get a chance to today though – I wanted to check out the story lines. Since the diplomacy line should be brand new I’m interested to see what it is. I noticed that the chunk had buffs up, so it’s nice that you can move the city levers even there.

For now, the zone gets a thumbs up from me. We’ll see how the last four levels go in the newb experience. I tend to think that this game is almost more like EQ1 in the respect that if you just simply pick it up and expect how to play right off the bat, you’re going to grow frustrated. But if you team up with someone else who has played, and have them show you the way, you can grow to enjoy it a lot more. Not exactly newb friendly (either game). That is one of the major winning points in Vanguard though for those who do play constantly, the complexity of it. More ramblings later!

More Vanguard – Bringing Sexy.. Where?

The screen shot above is what happens if you click “view body” from the character creation screen. That’s right, of course that view right there is the most important body view, right? It must be. When I first logged my characters in I didn’t bother creating anything new. I just wanted to see where everything was, and make sure my house was still standing. It was, thankfully. It wasn’t until I noticed Ishbel’s HORRIBLE default ears, that I noticed a few other things that had changed.

Yeah, they were pretty bad. I was mad – at first. Then once I entered the edit mode for my characters I realized that they gave back all of the sliders (almost all) that made character customization a little more interesting. I didn’t want ears that were so large they could not only hear all of Telon but half of Norrath as well. The torpedo breasts that Minxes recieved were plesant the first time she went swimming, but then quickly became an annoyance.

So I was blissfully happy to see these sliders returned to us, and I set to downgrading everyones ears, and chests. At least now my characters are looking half normal. I’m still not to keen on the new clothing – some of it is great, I’ve seen some people wandering around in what looks like very nice stuff. I myself sport no such thing, but maybe in time I’ll be able to look as good as they do. I saw some interesting weapon graphics with a few particle effects. Game ran as smooth for me as it did before I stopped playing last time, I’ve never really had any huge issues. I play on balanced settings, no shadows which is fine for me.

Channels were busy again tonight, lots of people asking for help, wondering if various quests were broken, etc. I saw one or two new people talking in channels asking about what to do once they were dropped out of the newbie island experience. Kasul may be giving VG a test tomorrow, so I’m holding off on the island until he’s ready to play. These experiences are always a lot more fun with a friend around.
