Wurm Online

Unicorns, Deer, Cows, and Pigs! Oh My. #WurmOnline

wurm.20131231.0130

As I’ve already mentioned in numerous other Wurm Online posts, I really love raising animals, even the type that don’t have an enormous use. Take unicorns for example. Most deeds and open space is filled with them. They make great creatures to farm for leather, but here in my pen pictured above I have two sly and a champion that I’m currently breeding. I can’t ride them yet (you need very high body control) but they’re nice to have around. I also have three deer, who also provide leather and alchemy bits. They don’t pull carts and you can’t ride them but I like to have them around.

I was keeping a few pigs but there is a server mission ongoing that asks you to sacrifice them to Fo, one of the deity. I spent a painstaking few hours creating a sacrificial knife (really hard to do with only 1 weaponsmith skill) and then partook in the mission. We’re sitting at 63% completion with me being 46% of that. You get some karma and sleep bonus if you participate, so I hope eventually we’re able to finish the task.

I used to have a chicken but the servers went down yesterday morning and we had a slight rollback of creatures. I searched the nearby woods to see if I could spot it but I had no luck. Chickens are another ‘useless’ creature but I like them a lot.

I’ve been making a lot of progress with the deed. I used a pendulum to divine a water tile, created a nice path, almost finished my horse pens (they just need gates), and improved my forge in my workshop (which has no walls but will one day). Things are going pretty well and I’m looking forward to working my fine carpentry up even higher along with alchemy on the priest.

As always, happy gaming no matter where you find yourself!

The Meta Game of Horse Breeding #WurmOnline

wurm.20140101.0154One of my favorite things to do in Wurm Online is breed animals. Not just the regular sort that are actually useful (horses for riding and pulling carts) but all sorts of animals that I find in the wild. This is made infinitely easier with the help of a Fo priest who has access to charm. In order to breed animals successfully I find it helps to have them in a 2×2 pen paired up with their partner. It’s easy to check traits, and less worry about disease (overcrowding can be an issue). There are 19 different traits that animals can have when bred, first generation creatures do not come with traits.

  • 0 skill: Horse’s color is considered a trait. (Although it DOES NOT go against the trait limit.)
  • 20 (10.56) skill: “It will fight fiercely.” (Higher fighting skill?)
  • 21 (11.12) skill: “It has fleeter movement than normal.” (Minor speed boost.)
  • 22 (11.68) skill: “It is a tough bugger.” (Withstands more damage.)
  • 23 (12.25) skill: “It has a strong body.” (Bonus to maintaining top speed.)
  • 24 (12.82) skill: “It has lightning movement.” (Randomly increases speed for a short duration.)
  • 25 (13.40) skill: “It can carry more than average.” (Less penalty to speed due to high load.)
  • 26 (13.98) skill: “It has very strong leg muscles.” (Less penalty to speed due to slope? Does not currently do this.)
  • 27 (14.56) skill: “It has keen senses.” (Increased aggression range, or possibly harder to tame?)
  • 28 (15.15) skill: “It has malformed hindlegs.” (Minor speed penalty)*
  • 29 (15.74) skill: “The legs are of different length.” (Major speed penalty)*
  • 30 (16.33) skill: “It seems overly aggressive.” (Goes into frenzy when attacked)*
  • 31 (16.93) skill: “It looks very unmotivated.” (Seldom uses speed boosts?)*
  • 32 (17.54) skill: “It is unusually strong willed.” (Will stop being led at random.)*
  • 33 (18.15) skill: “It has some illness.” (Body strength will slowly reduce over time, which will eventually making the animal unrideable. Note: Genesis will cause it to slowly regain strength up to it’s old level.)*
  • 34 (18.76) skill: “It looks constantly hungry.” (is twice as fast to become hungry again.)*
  • 39 (21.90) skill: “It looks feeble and unhealthy.” (Prone to catching a disease.)*
  • 40 (22.54) skill: “It looks unusually strong and healthy.” (Has a higher resistance to disease.)
  • 41 (23.19) skill: “It has a certain spark in its eyes.” (Affects breeding? Will not die of old age? Disproved, see talk.)

Ideally players want horses that have the 5 ‘speed’ traits. These horses sell for more than your average creature, and are highly sought after. You need to work your animal husbandry skill in order to see these traits, and I use a very amazing program called Wurm Assistant that helps me keep my herds under control. Inbreeding horses is a bad thing and can leave them with negative traits – but – since I have a Fo priest I can cure these negative traits with a quick genesis cast. Along with the four horses pictured above, I now have three unicorns (one a champion that I have had absolutely zero luck getting to breed), three deer (I used to have two, one just gave birth), a cow, and a hen. I’m hoping to find a bull wandering around my island, since the creatures don’t swim and they can’t be transported I have no way of obtaining one.

All in all, I think I’m off to a pretty good start. As always, happy gaming no matter where you find yourself!

Off to Visit Santa #WurmOnline

wurm.20131228.2243After experiencing a few issues with my web site early last week, I lost two weeks worth of posts and then didn’t really feel like writing. I’m hoping to make up for that over the next little while though. Just because I haven’t written doesn’t mean that I haven’t been playing games!

Most of my time has been spent between Wurm Online and World of Warcraft, two incredibly different games. Wurm is as sandbox as they come, and WoW is a theme park. Still, I love both of them. In Wurm I continue to play on the Pristine server. Actually I decided since I have been neglecting my Exodus deed I would move the token and downsize the place. It used to be approximately 60×60 tiles, and is now 18×18. This lowered my rent a considerable amount and since I had a lot of upkeep pre-paid, I earned all of it back. I shifted that coin over to Pristine, and went shopping, hence the screenshot above.

The market is in the center of the zone and I live along the very south coast. I swam from my island to the mainland, and then proceeded to walk to Blossom. Since the character I decided to go with is a priest of Fo I had no aggro from any creatures along the way. The walk was relatively painless and it was neat to see how the land has changed and been shaped over time. I crossed many deserted deeds, and fought back the urge to pillage. I didn’t want anything to weigh me down until after I got to the market.

Once there, I took out some coin from the token and then browsed through all of the merchants. I picked up three 70 quality weapons. A two-handed sword for the Fo priest, a long sword for my main character, and a large maul for bashing. I also picked up a full set of chain armor for 10 copper per piece. It’s only 60 quality but that was more than enough for me. A copper lantern caught my eye, 70 quality which means the light is quite bright. A 60 ql toolbelt was added to my quickly growing pile of items. I saw a miss-priced emerald and picked that up. I debated getting a new carving knife for working on my fine carpentry skill but decided against it for now. Oh, and I also purchased a shield.

Instead of walking all of the way home I decided to use some of my karma to gate. It costs 1,000 karma but it ports you right back into your town. I had never used the skill before but it worked flawlessly and I was pleased. The coloured smoke you see off in the distance is Santa who stands at Blossom (or stood I suppose, he’s gone now) feeding players delicious holiday food and rewarding premium players with a 99 ql snowball lantern (our gift this year). It was quite a walk, but  really had a great time. No surprise there, I adore exploring in Wurm.

The deed is coming along very well, expect a post about those details to follow! As always, happy gaming, no matter where you find yourself.

Bridges Coming to Wurm Online (oh my) #WurmOnline

1468576_687064091312662_1291102745_nI still play on Exodus with Stargrace and Faralithe, and I still have Blesse over on Pristine although that account is currently inactive (just too expensive to keep everyone premium). Today I took a rare sailboat that was donated to me by Yetian (who is staying at my deed while we wait to see if Pristine ever joins the rest of the server clusters ) over to Deliverance to check on my merchant at Puzzle Plaza. I had almost 5 silver waiting on my merchant, so I decided to brave the walk and head from the south coast to the market. Not too bad of a walk, I do have 75 fight skill, but I am also not wearing any armor at the moment, so things tend to hurt (it’s on my list).

Anyhow, the real excitement came when I saw that the developers have been working on new bridges for the game. Above is one of three models they’ve posted so far, the stone one. I do think that their rope and wood bridges also look fantastic, but if you want to see those ones you’ll have to check them out yourself, you can find pictures on facebook, twitter, and the forums (and my G+ profile if you happen to use that). I’m eager to see what people do with these bridges. Will they span servers connecting people together? Will they at least span oceans, and islands? It opens up so much travel potential – of course a lot of that depends on the state of decay and how quickly these bridges may fall apart. Hopefully people using them will do their bit to help repair.

There are also some new torches in the works that are supposed to be ideal for lighting dark areas – like the inside of mines. I’m also excited about this, even with lights my mine is incredibly dark, and some characters rarely ever see the light of day because of all the mining they do.

I managed to finish off a house project that I had started some time ago. I grabbed a bunch of clay on my way home from Deliverance (I haven’t bothered to find out where there is clay close to me on Exodus) and after completing the last 7 remaining walls (20 mortar and 20 bricks each wall) I was able to add the roof. I’m debating adding a second floor but I usually prefer single story homes. We’ll see how adventurous I get.

Aside from that life in Wurm (lately) has been pretty quiet. Until I outfit myself with a bit more armor I haven’t been wandering far from home or exploring. I’m hoping to change that a bit this week perhaps, first I’ll have to stockpile some food and drink and a bandage or two.

As always, happy gaming, no matter where you find yourself!

Wurm Offline & the EverQuest 2 Expansion #WurmOnline #EverQuest2

EQ2_000047I was hoping to get some time in Wurm Online over the weekend, but that was not in the cards. The game has been down for a few days now, dealing with various issues. Hopefully things get fixed before too long but we’ll just have to see. I hope my animals survive and I hope the impact on players is minimal but because Wurm Online is a ‘living world’ I’m not sure what we’ll see when we’re finally able to play.

It has been kept pretty quiet, but the next expansion for EverQuest 2 releases this Tuesday (tomorrow). Tears of Veeshan. I’m excited, but not nearly as much as I have been in the past. I’m looking forward to new crafting quests, and a signature line or two. I’m not really excited about the zones or overland quests themselves after having played through the content in beta, but I think some of that is because I’m already tired of being level 95. The new aa choices don’t excite me since I prefer the almost unlimited choices of EQ1. The 10 year veteran reward is also looming, I believe I have less than a week to go before I can redeem it. This year it is a shadowknight or paladin mercenary. I wish there had been more choices. Not everyone needs a tank mercenary, and not everyone likes to adventure. Still, it is better than nothing, and I congratulate the game on making 9 years. It surprises me some times that I’ve been playing for that long.

There’s a lot of exciting game related things going on lately. The release of the PS4, the XBox One, the new games coming to those consoles, the expansions for EQ2, the information released at BlizzCon, and numerous other game related tidbits that have been released lately. It’s a good time to be a gamer (but perhaps not a good time to be a wallet).

As always, happy gaming, no matter where you find yourself!
